Rumours of Arsenal’s interest in Manchester City defender John Stones has got supporters talking after he allegedly agreed to hold talks with Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta.
It’s no secret that the Gunners have struggled defensively this season and new head coach Mikel Arteta is thought to be targeting reinforcements before the January transfer window closes.
Many central defenders have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium in recent months, this list includes Dayot Upamecano, Jerome Boateng and Samuel Umtiti among others.
But it would appear that Arteta is ready to raid his former club.
According to The Sun , the Spanish tactician is interested in a surprise move for Stones, who is reportedly keen for regular first-team football during the second half of the season in order to secure his place in England’s squad for Euro 2020.
However, the return to fitness of Aymeric Laporte means that Stones could see his opportunities limited at the Etihad Stadium, especially with Fernandinho performing so well at the back.
Stones is represented by the same agency as Gunners head coach Mikel Arteta, and a source within the report claims that the defender is open to a move – even as a loan, with Pep Guardiola reportedly having lost faith.
“He was in London to see his agent last week and is due back again this week. He knows if he is to resurrect his England career he has to get more time on the pitch.
“Arteta is in need of defenders so it could be perfect for both of them.”
Stones hasn’t quite set the world alight since his big money move to Man City from Everton a few summers ago, but could a reunion with Arteta reignite his career?
