Why Did Max Leave ‘Catfish’ and Who Is the New Host Kamie Crawford?

Catfish fans were in for a surprise in 2018 when Nev Schulman‘s longtime co-host Max Joseph quit the show after seven seasons. Thankfully, the MTV reality series carried on despite his exit, and they found ways to make due without Schulman’s other half.

During Season 7 of Catfish, the first without Joseph, Schulman was joined by a rotating panel of guest hosts, including singer Elle King, basketball star Nick Young, actress Kimiko Glenn, and rapper Slick Woods. But only one of the Catfish guests, Kamie Crawford, stuck around for more than just Season 7. Crawford was officially named Catfish co-host this year, and her first season in the role airs on MTV tonight.

If you’re still wondering what’s up with Joseph’s exit, or curious about his replacement, we’ve got answers. Here’s everything you need to know about the former Catfish host’s departure and the woman who’s stepping in to fill his spot.

WHY DID MAX LEAVE CATFISH?

Max Joseph announced his departure from Catfish after working on the series with Nev Schulman for six seasons. Joseph revealed his exit in a 2018 Instagram post.

“Hey guys, the time has come, sadly, for me to move on from Catfish,” he wrote. “Working on this show for the last seven years has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. I’ve learned a lot about myself, my country and human nature in general. Nev and I have become brothers and our bromance has blossomed before your eyes.”

Joseph said at the time that he was leaving the MTV show so he could balance his work as a host and a filmmaker; he’s worked on multiple short films, and released his first feature-length movie in 2015 titled We Are Your Friends, starring Zac Efron and Emily Ratajkowski.

WHO IS KAMIE CRAWFORD?

Kamie Crawford, the new official Catfish co-host, is a beauty pageant winner and former Miss Teen USA. And she’s heard all of your questions about where Max Joseph went — along with a meme posted on Twitter today, she joked, “Stop asking where @maxjoseph is. I told you – I tied him up and I’m holding him hostage in my broom closet. I don’t want to have to keep addressing this. It’s upsetting me and my homegirl!”

Crawford first appeared on Catfish in 2019, when she came on as a guest host alongside Nev Schulman. In January, Crawford announced that MTV would be bringing her on as a full-time, permanent host on Catfish.  “NO ONE will ever replace @maxjoseph, but I feel so blessed and excited to be @NevSchulman’s new sidekick!!!” she wrote on Twitter at the time.

Catch Crawford’s first hosting gig as Schulman’s official “new sidekick” tonight, when Season 8 of Catfish premieres on MTV at 8/7c.
