Dolphin swept 9 miles inland from Gulf of Mexico by Hurricane Laura — and survived

A female bottlenose dolphin got the break of her life after Hurricane Laura.

The hurricane’s storm surge swept the mammal from the Gulf of Mexico to a Louisiana pond — 9 miles inland.

The Audubon Coastal Wildlife Network, Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network and National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration worked together to rescue the dolphin, New Orleans radio station WWL reported.

“This was a multi-day and multi-organizational effort to rescue, transport, and release this bottlenose dolphin,” Gabriella Harlamert, coordinator of Audubon’s marine mammal rescue and rehab efforts, told WWL. “All these agencies came together for the common goal of making a positive impact on the natural world.”

The dolphin was in good health and released back into the gulf.
