Jets avoid Mekhi Becton injury scenario they feared the most

It was natural to fear the worst when Mekhi Becton left Sunday’s game with an injury, especially given how the Jets’ season has gone thus far, but they appear to have avoided it with their rookie left tackle.

Becton, the brightest spot early on the winless Jets, underwent an MRI exam on his shoulder Monday and the results were encouraging for a change, giving him a shot to play Thursday against the Broncos.

“The MRI and everything turned out better than really we were thinking [Sunday] night,” Adam Gase said on a conference call Monday, less than 24 hours removed from a 36-7 loss to the Colts. “We’ll kind of see how he gets through the rest of the week and possibly he could play in this game. We’ll take this one day by day. There’s just going to be a lot of work in the training room to see where he’s at by Thursday.”

Becton left the game late in the second quarter and was replaced by Connor McDermott. Gase said the injury happened when the 6-foot-7, 364-pound tackle got extended with the same shoulder that had limited him at two practices last week.

“I think we all kind of got nervous because he was kind of grabbing his pec a little bit,” Gase said. “We weren’t really sure until we got the MRI back. I know he’s very motivated to get back out there. He kind of saw how the holes weren’t quite opening up the same when he’s out of the game.”

Elsewhere on the Jets injury front, Gase said wide receiver Jamison Crowder (hamstring) will go through the team’s walkthroughs this week and then see how he’s feeling by Thursday. Fellow wideout Breshad Perriman (ankle) will not be ready in time.

Linebacker Jordan Jenkins (shoulder) is day-to-day but “it’s gonna be hard to hold him out,” Gase said. Right tackle George Fant remains in the concussion protocol but is taking the “next steps,” Gase said, as is cornerback Quincy Wilson. Safety Ashtyn Davis (groin) will try to do some of the walkthroughs, but Gase was “less hopeful for him.” Defensive end Jordan Willis (ankle) also sounds doubtful to play.
