Two veteran members of the FDNY — an EMT and a mechanics supervisor who oversaw ambulance repair — died of the coronavirus, the department announced this week.
EMT Richard Seaberry, 63, a 30-year-veteran who took part in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero, died of coronavirus complications late last month, according to the FDNY.
“For three decades, EMT Seaberry bravely served the City of New York, responding to thousands of medical emergencies. He was there so often during a New Yorker’s most desperate moments,” FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said in a Monday statement. “All of his brothers and sisters in the FDNY mourn EMT Seaberry’s loss.”
The Queens resident was most recently assigned to Station 53 at Ft. Totten, the FDNY said. He is survived by his wife Brynhild and two daughters, according to the department.
Supervisor of Mechanics Thomas Ward, 60, who served the department for 26 years, died of the virus on Monday, the FDNY said.
Ward, of Massapequa, most recently served as the supervisor of the FDNY’s ambulance shop, where he was responsible for the repair and maintenance of the department’s entire ambulance fleet, according to the department.
“Thomas Ward is one of the many talented professionals who ensured day in and day out that the Department was ready to respond to every call for help that came our way,” Nigro said.
“His leadership and skills made certain our ambulances arrived quickly to help New Yorkers experiencing a medical emergency and that they would arrive safely at the hospital for additional care as well. The entire Department mourns his loss.”
Ward also served the Massapequa Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter for 32 years, according to the FDNY.
He is survived by his two sons, as well as his sisters and brothers.
