A policewoman and other two whose identities have not been known yet have been killed by unknown gunmen at Orji area of Owerri, Imo State Capital.
Oon Thursday, June 3, about seven gunmen stormed the area at around 5:30pm and shot periodically while strolling the neighbourhood.
According to reports, they began their operation from the Orji axis, proceeded to the Spibat area, and then visited other areas where three people were killed, including a female police officer and two men.
An eyewitness explained that gunmen robbed in black outfits came from the Amakohia axis on two vehicles, a bus and a Hilux, walking confidently down the road.
According to SunNews, the deceased policewoman was kidnapped on the day the gunmen attacked the Orji police station.
On Thursday, they reportedly returned to the officer during their operation after their request to exchange the officer with their members was unsuccessful.
Irked by their failure to comply with the requirement of release, the female officer was said to have been shot on the road.
“They came with the female police officer. I learnt that they kidnapped her the day they attacked Orji Divisional Police Headquarters. They dropped a message that they will only free her if their member in police custody was ready. Having waited without their demand being met, the hoodlums, came with the officer, brought her out and shot her dead.” the source claimed.
Reacting to the incident, State Police Command’s spokesperson, Bala Elkana, said:
“Normalcy has returned to Orji area by combined teams of the Police and other supporting security agencies. Three persons were killed by the hoodlums who blocked Orji flyover and started shooting sporadically. The cause of the shooting is still not clear at the moment. The investigation has, however, commenced.”
