SERAP Promises To Sue Buhari Administration Over ‘Illegal Indefinite Suspension’ Of Twitter In Nigeria

The Socio-Economic Rights And Accountability Project (SERAP) has made its decision to sue the Nigerian Government following the suspension of Twitter known.

On Friday, the Nigerian Government declared the suspension of operations of the microblogging platform in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by the Special Assistant Segun Adeyemi through the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed stated the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

According to the Minister, the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to begin the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria as soon as possible.

The development comes after Twitter removed President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet in which he threatened to punish Nigerians for “misbehaving” in “the language they understand.”

In the tweet Buhari dropped on the microblogging platform on Tuesday, affirmed that his administration would not spare those who are eager to destroy the country. He stated emphatically that “they would be treated in the language they understand”.

After the viral condemnation of the tweet, the social media giant took down the tweet on Wednesday. According to Twitter, the tweet in the long thread of text kicked against the rules of the platform.

Meanwhile, shortly after the suspension of the Twitter in Nigeria, SERAP reacted to the issue. The agency also made it plans to sue the government over the suspension known. It claimed that the government is infringing upon the right to freedom of expression of its citizens.

SERAP wrote;

“We’re suing Nigerian authorities over their ILLEGAL indefinite suspension of Twitter in Nigeria.

“Nigerians have a right to freedom of expression and access to information including online, and we plan to fight to keep it that way.

“@NigeriaGov, we’ll see you in court.”
