Donald Trump’s tax returns are now in the hands of the Manhattan DA

Former President Donald Trump’s tax returns and related records have been turned over to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office as part of a criminal probe — after he lost a protracted battle to keep them under wraps.

“Our office obtained the records on Monday,” said Danny Frost, a spokesman for Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr.

The documents were received just hours after the Supreme Court denied an emergency request to block the grand jury subpoena for the records, capping off an 18-month fight by Trump’s legal team to keep his tax returns secret.

As part of a probe into alleged bank fraud by the Trump Organization and hush money payments made to two women, Vance’s office convened a grand jury that subpoenaed eight years of financial records from Trump’s accounting firm Mazars USA LLP.

After the subpoena was issued in 2019, Trump’s lawyers argued that as a sitting president he could not be investigated.

The Supreme Court ruled against him last summer, and he appealed. The case was returned to a lower court that upheld the decision to release the documents.

Trump’s legal team then made an emergency request to halt the release of the sensitive records, which the high court denied.

The financial records are subject to grand jury secrecy rules and will not be released to the public.

Trump has railed against Vance’s investigation, calling it a “continuation of the worst witch hunt in American history.”
