Top NY Court of Appeals judge retires over ‘health concerns’

One of New York state’s top judges said Tuesday that he plans to step down from the bench because of health concerns.

New York State Court of Appeals Judge Paul Feinman, 61, will retire from the highest court in the state because of unspecified health issues, according to a statement from the court.

Chief Judge Janet DiFiore said in a statement that Feinman “is an exceptional Judge and a magnificent human being who has made an extraordinary contribution to this institution during his tenure.”

Feinman was nominated to the high court by Governor Cuomo in 2017, becoming the first openly gay judge to serve on the Albany panel.

The Hempstead native was elected to the Civil Court of the City of New York in 1996 before being elected a Justice of the Manhattan Supreme Court in 2007, according to his judicial biography.

Neither Feinman or DiFiore could immediately be reached for comment.
